BRO: A youth-driven safety planning app for wellbeing and connection

BRO is a digital safety planning app created for young people in Aotearoa New Zealand, with particular focus on Māori and Pacific youth. The project brings together researchers, clinicians, software engineers, and secondary school students in a co-design process that prioritises cultural relevance, authenticity, and youth ownership.

The name BRO, short for “Bro, Reach Out”, was chosen by the youth design group — a team of five Māori high school students who also helped shape the app’s graffiti-inspired aesthetic and tone. Their goal was to create a platform that feels familiar and safe, encouraging peers to reach out for help when needed.

BRO’s prototype includes a personalised safety plan, an interactive chatbot, a reflective Wall for journaling and sharing ideas, and a curated list of New Zealand helplines and support services.

The project remains in active research and development, exploring how digital tools can support self-expression, connection, and help-seeking among young people.

Kekeno Tech led the design and technical development of BRO — delivering the full app architecture, backend systems, and UI design — and continues to collaborate closely with the University of Auckland research team as the project evolves.
